News Release
August 16, 2001

(Camp Edwards, MA) — The Impact Area Groundwater Study Program (IAGWSP) office has notified the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) that it detonated an 81mm mortar on Thursday, August 16, in accordance with appropriate safety protocols. The mortar was near the former H Range off of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). This event did not affect the safety buffer zones established with the Sandwich School Committee and the Sandwich Selectmen.

The detonation of this munition did not pose a threat to public safety. Disposal in this manner eliminated a potential safety hazard to all personnel in the area.

Army National Guard contractors detonated the munition. They will sample the soil for residual explosive compounds. If any contamination is found, the soil will be removed and disposed of in accordance with applicable regulations.
