River River Drops of rain on a leaf

News Release
November 6, 2001

(Camp Edwards, MA) — Technicians from the Impact Area Groundwater Study Program office will detonate an unexploded munition at the Massachusetts Military Reservation on Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The item is a 4.2 inch mortar near the center of the artillery and mortar impact area of Camp Edwards in the MMR.

It cannot be moved safely and will be destroyed in place. This method of disposal eliminates an unsafe situation for groundwater study field technicians.

The detonation of the munition does not pose a threat to public safety or affect the safety buffer zones established with the Sandwich School Committee and the Town of Sandwich Selectmen.

Army National Guard contractors will be responsible for detonating the munition and sampling the soil at the location for residual explosive compounds. If any contamination is found, the soil will be removed and disposed of in accordance with applicable regulations.
