Unexploded Munitions To Be Detonated

(Camp Edwards, MA) — Technicians from the Impact Area Groundwater Study Program office will detonate unexploded munitions at the Massachusetts Military Reservation on Thursday, January 31st between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The twelve items are nine 30MM projectiles, one 3.5" rocket, one 66MM rocket motor with hazardous fuze and one 60MM mortar. The 60MM mortar is located near the center of the Camp Edwards Impact Area in the MMR; the other eleven items are located on the J-2 range.

The items cannot be moved safely and will be destroyed in place. This method of disposal eliminates an unsafe situation for groundwater study field technicians.

The detonation of these munitions does not pose a threat to public safety or affect the safety buffer zones established with the Sandwich School Committee and the Town of Sandwich Selectmen.

Army National Guard contractors will be responsible for detonating the munitions and sampling the soil at each location for residual explosive compounds. If any contamination is found, the soil will be removed and disposed of in accordance with applicable regulations.
