Groundwater Study Program to Present Update at IART Meeting

Camp Edwards, Mass. —The Impact Area Groundwater Study Program will present an update of recent investigation and cleanup activities at the Impact Area Review Team (IART) meeting from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, August 26, at the Holiday Inn-Cape Cod, 291 Jones Road, Falmouth.

The update will cover continuing investigations on the Southeast Ranges, at the Demolition Area 2, and on and off the base near Camp Edwards’ western boundary and northwest corner. There also will be a progress report on the removal of munitions and related items at the former demolition-training area known as Demolition Area 1. This 7.4-acre site is being cleared in preparation for a proposed soil cleanup action. The soil cleanup would excavate and clean almost 25,000 tons of contaminated soil.

IART members and the public also will have the opportunity to learn about and provide input on Low Temperature Thermal Desorption, a soil treatment technology being proposed by the Groundwater Study Program for the Demolition Area 1 cleanup. The Thermal Desorption presentation will explain how this technology works and why the Groundwater Study Program is considering it for this project.

The IART is comprised of citizen members from the communities surrounding the Massachusetts Military Reservation, and representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the Groundwater Study Program. The team meets monthly to review Groundwater Study Program activities and provide input to program management. The public is invited to attend this meeting and participate in discussions regarding the investigation and cleanup.
