Public Input Sought on Planned Soil Cleanup at Camp Edwards

Camp Edwards, Mass. — A 15-day informal public comment period begins Tuesday, February 25, on the Impact Area Groundwater Study Program’s proposed workplan for cleaning up contaminated soil at a former Camp Edwards’ demolition-training site. The public comment period will run through 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 11.

Community members will have the opportunity learn about the proposed cleanup action for Demolition Area 1 (Demo 1) at a poster session, beginning at 5 p.m., at the Holiday Inn hotel in Falmouth. Representatives from the Groundwater Study Program, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection will be available to answer questions and take comments. The poster session will be followed, at 6 p.m., by the Impact Area Review Team meeting, which is open to the public.

The Demo 1 workplan for soil outlines the proposed approach for removing soil contaminated by explosive and propellant compounds. This action will eliminate a source of groundwater contamination from the 7.4-acre area, previously used for explosives training and the disposal of military munitions and illegal fireworks.

Copies of the draft workplan will be available for review beginning February 24, 2003, on the Groundwater Study Program Web site, www.groundwaterprogram.org. The workplan also will be available at the Falmouth, Sandwich and Mashpee Public Libraries, the Jonathan Bourne Library in Bourne and the U.S. Coast Guard Library on the Massachusetts Military Reservation.

Public comments will be taken during the poster session and the Impact Area Review Team meeting. Mailed comments should be sent to: Groundwater Study Program, Attn: David Hill, PB 565/567 West Outer Road, Camp Edwards, MA 02542-5003. Comments can be sent by fax to 508-968-5286, or by e-mail to: david.hill@ma.ngb.army.mil.
