Public Input Sought on Camp Edwards' Soil Cleanup Plan

Camp Edwards, Mass. — A 15-day public comment period on a planned soil removal action in Camp Edwards' Central Impact Area will begin Tuesday, Dec. 9. Community members currently can review the Rapid Response Action Plan for Central Impact Area Soil on the Groundwater Study Program Web site or at the Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee and Sandwich public libraries.

Information on the plan, which calls for the removal of contaminated and potentially contaminated soil at two former artillery and mortar targets in the Central Impact Area, will be presented at the Dec. 9 meeting of the Impact Area Review Team (IART) citizens' advisory committee. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn — Cape Cod, 291 Jones Road, Falmouth.

According to Program Manager Kent "Hap" Gonser, the planned Rapid Response Action is one of several interim soil removals being taken or proposed by the Groundwater Study Program to remove known or potential sources of groundwater contamination. The work in the Central Impact Area also will help determine future cleanup activities in the Central Impact Area, which contains a number of targets from the artillery, mortar and other firing activities formerly conducted there.

Public comments on the Rapid Response Action Plan for Central Impact Area Soil will be taken during the IART meeting or can be submitted, through Dec. 24, at the Groundwater Study Program Web site or to:
