Monitoring Well Installation Planned in Sandwich

Camp Edwards, Mass. — Installation of a groundwater monitoring well will begin off the eastern side of Route 130, across from Bramblebush Drive in Sandwich today. A police detail will be present to ensure that activities do not interfere with traffic in the area.

The drilling rig used for the installation will be visible from the road during the three weeks required for well construction. Work on the well will be conducted between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, until January 7. Work on the well will not be conducted from December 23 through January 1.

The finished well will consist of a flush-mounted, eight-inch well casing. It will allow groundwater samples to be taken at various levels of the aquifer to help define the extent of any groundwater contamination that may be emanating from the Southeast Ranges of Camp Edwards. It is one of several monitoring wells the Impact Area Groundwater Study Program plans to install on and off base between the Southeast Ranges and the Forestdale area of Sandwich. This work is part of the program's investigation into groundwater detections of the explosives chemical, RDX, and the water soluble salt, perchlorate near the base's eastern boundary. The well location was coordinated with town officials, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP).
