Cleanup Plans Available for Review

Camp Edwards, Mass. — Documents outlining two groundwater cleanup actions at Camp Edwards on the Massachusetts Military Reservation currently are available for review on the Impact Area Groundwater Study Program's Web site: www.groundwaterprogram.org, as well as at the public libraries in Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee and Sandwich. Fifteen-day public comment periods on these documents will begin Tuesday, June 22.

The revised draft Feasibility Study Demo 1 Groundwater Operable Unit outlines long-term alternatives for cleanup of groundwater contamination from the former open burn and disposal area known as Demolition Area 1. The study describes and compares six alternatives for addressing the contamination.

The J-3 Range Groundwater Rapid Response Action Plan proposes using components of the Fuel Spill-12 (FS-12) extraction, treatment and reinjection system to capture and treat groundwater contamination from the area on Camp Edwards known as the J-3 Range. Located on the southeast corner of Camp Edwards, above Snake Pond, the J-3 Range formerly was used for training and defense contractor testing. The proposed action would be an interim measure to address groundwater contamination in the J-3 area while the investigation and final cleanup plans for the J-3 Range are completed. The FS-12 extraction, treatment and reinjection system is operated by the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence's Installation Restoration Program.

Presentations on both the revised draft Feasibility Study Demo 1 Groundwater Operable Unit and the J-3 Range Groundwater Rapid Response Action Plan will be given at the June 22 meeting of the Impact Area Review Team (IART) citizens' advisory committee. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Forestdale School, off of Route 130 in Sandwich.
