Plume Investigation Continues on Camp Edwards' Southeast Corner

Camp Edwards, Mass. — Recent preliminary sampling results from a groundwater monitoring well drilled as part of an ongoing investigation of groundwater contamination on Camp Edwards' southeast corner showed detections of the explosives compound RDX above the 2 part per billion (ppb) federal lifetime health advisory.

Since the well is not used for drinking water, and homes in the neighboring area are on town water, this detection does not present an immediate health risk.

The detection was found in samples taken during the drilling of a drive-point well on the base's southeast boundary with the Forestdale area of Sandwich. This type of well, which allows for quicker profiling of possible areas of contamination, was installed as part of an investigation into groundwater contamination from the former defense contractor testing and military training site known as the J-1 Range.

Two additional drive-point wells were immediately drilled nearby to help determine the area of contamination. Those results and groundwater samples from permanent monitoring wells at these sites will be evaluated to determine the location of future wells or drive points, both on and off base.

Future off-base monitoring well locations selected to help define the nature and extent of the groundwater contamination may include the Grand Oak Road neighborhood in Forestdale. The Impact Area Groundwater Study Program will be working with Sandwich officials and residents to determine well sites and to keep them informed regarding investigation.

Additional information on the J-1 Range and other Groundwater Study Program investigations will be presented at the Impact Area Review Team meeting beginning at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 26 at Christ the King Church in Mashpee.
