Additional Sampling Scheduled for Snake Pond

Camp Edwards, Mass. — Technicians from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) will be taking groundwater samples from approximately 10 locations below the bottom of Snake Pond in Sandwich, Tuesday, March 19, and Wednesday, March 20, 2002. The sampling is being conducted by The National Guard Bureau's Impact Area Groundwater Study Program as part of its ongoing investigation and cleanup at Camp Edwards on the Massachusetts Military Reservation.

Samples will be taken, using a small boat, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on both days. The collection of these samples is associated with the continued investigation of explosives contamination resulting from historic activities conducted at the training and research ranges located along Greenway Road on Camp Edwards.

The Groundwater Study Program previously conducted tests of Snake Pond's water and the groundwater flowing under the pond in April and December 2001, respectively. The data collected from the current sampling will help determine the nature and extent of any contamination.

The Impact Area Groundwater Study Program has been working on an investigation and cleanup of the upper 15,000 acres at Camp Edwards since 1997. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection oversee the program. The Groundwater Study Program makes it a policy to inform the public of advances in the investigations and cleanup as well as any significant findings or planned activities.
