Monitoring Well Installation Planned at Canal Scenic Overlook

Camp Edwards, Mass. — Installation of a flush-mounted monitoring well will begin next week at the Scenic Overlook off Sandwich Road in Bourne. The Impact Area Groundwater Study Program is installing the well as part of its investigation of groundwater contamination near the northwest corner of the Massachusetts Military Reservation. Construction of the well, which will only temporarily interfere with use of the overlook, is scheduled for completion by November 26.

The Scenic Overlook will be closed during the installation of a six-inch well casing and up to three well screens that will allow samples to be taken at various levels of the water table. Work on the well will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drilling equipment will be enclosed by a barrier, but will still be visible from portions of Sandwich Road.

After installation, the well casing will be cut off below ground surface and capped. A concrete apron surrounding the well also will be set into the ground and any disruption of the surrounding landscape will be repaired.

The Groundwater Study Program recently installed seven other monitoring wells between the northwest corner of Camp Edwards and the Cape Cod Canal as part of its investigation. Four additional monitoring wells are scheduled for installation, on and off the base, to provide further information on the extent and possible source of contamination in this area. Completion of these wells is expected by year-end.
