Army to Fund Municipal Water Hookups for Three Port of Call Homes

Camp Edwards, Mass. — The U.S. Army Environmental Center today announced plans to pay to connect three homes in Bourne's Port of Call neighborhood to the municipal water supply.

According to Hap Gonser, program manager for the Army Environmental Center's Impact Area Groundwater Study Program, the water-service connections are being offered due to detections of the explosives chemical, RDX, above the 2-parts-per-billion federal Health Advisory in a groundwater monitoring well located upgradient on the base boundary. While the detection does not pose an immediate threat to the private wells in the Port of Call neighborhood, there is a possibility of future impact.

Gonser explained that the decision to connect these homes to an alternate water supply is based on the uncertainty regarding the nearby Cape Cod Canal's influence on the direction and rate of groundwater flow in the area.

"The Army is committed to protecting public safety," Gonser said. "Converting these three homes to municipal water will eliminate any possibility of exposure of the residents to contamination above risk-based levels from groundwater emanating from Camp Edwards."

The three homeowners, who currently use private wells, will be offered hookups to the Bourne Water District, including engineering services, residential hookups and landscape repair.
