Monitoring Well Installation Planned Off Sandwich Road

Camp Edwards, Mass. — The Impact Area Groundwater Study Program will begin drilling for a groundwater monitoring well on Army Corps of Engineers property near the Cape Cod Canal in Bourne this week. Installation of a flush-mounted, six-inch well casing will not interfere with traffic or other area activities.

The monitoring well is being installed just off Sandwich Road across from the Cape Cod Technical School. The drilling rig used for the installation will be visible from the road during the three weeks required for well construction. Work on the well will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

This well will allow groundwater samples to be taken at various levels of the aquifer to help define the extent of groundwater contamination emanating off the northwest corner of Camp Edwards. It is one of 15 monitoring wells the Groundwater Study Program has installed or plans to install on and off base between the northwest corner of Camp Edwards and the canal. This work is part of the program's investigation into groundwater detections of the oxidizer, perchlorate and the explosives chemical, RDX.
