Information Session Planned on Sandwich Groundwater Investigations

Camp Edwards, Mass. — A community information session on groundwater investigations being conducted in and near the Forestdale area is scheduled for Tuesday, September 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Oakcrest Cove Lodge at Peter's Pond, 34 Quaker Meetinghouse Road, in Sandwich.

This information session will allow residents to talk one-on-one with representatives from the Impact Area Groundwater Study Program, which is conducting an investigation into groundwater contamination at Camp Edwards on the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). Residents will be able to ask questions regarding groundwater investigations both on and off base near the Camp Edwards' boundary and Forestdale neighborhood.

The event will also include information on groundwater monitoring wells being installed in two neighborhoods in the Forestdale area. Installation of up to five wells is planned to begin as early as September 19th on town property at Snake Pond. Installation of the first of three wells in the Grand Oak neighborhood is scheduled to begin September 26th at the intersection of Grand Oak Road and Little Acorn Lane. These wells will be used to determine if contamination is present in the groundwater at these specific locations. Drilling locations were coordinated with town officials and notices have been sent to local residents informing them of work hours and operations.

Informational displays and handouts related to the Groundwater Study Program also will be available. Representatives from the Groundwater Study Program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection will be available to answer questions.

Residents interested in learning more about Groundwater Study Program activities are encouraged to attend the event.
